Willa Rea Hughes

Willa Rea Hughes, 78, of Columbus went home to be with Jesus in her sleep Thursday, July 18th in the caring hands of the staff at Trinity Place Healthcare Center.

She was born Oct. 11, 1934, and was one of five children of the late Travis and Floyce Price of Vernon, AL. On Oct. 1, 1949, she started her life with her soul mate, Thomas “Pee Wee” Hughes. During her 56 years of marriage, all she ever wanted was to love and care for her husband and family.

Willa Rea began working at 16 at the garment plant in Columbus, MS where she and Pee Wee made their home. She also worked for a time at the Mississippi University for Women Bookstore and part time at The Uniform Center of Columbus. Most of her later years were spent as a full time homemaker.

She was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she held several positions on committees and was the teacher of the senior ladies Bible study class.
Willa Rea mostly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite time was the holidays where everyone would gather at her home on Highway 50 and eat big meals and fellowship.

She is survived by her children-Tommy (Trish) Hughes, Johnny (Robin) Hughes, and Brandi (Marty) Caldwell. She has been blessed with nine grandchildren: Amber Bazzell, Kala Leathers, Charlie Hughes, Casey Hughes, Price Hughes, Dylan Hughes, Trey Caldwell, Brady Caldwell, and Leilah Caldwell and three great-grandchildren; Hagan Bazzell, Corbin Bazzell and Presley Leathers. She is also survived by her sister Kathleen Adams and by her brother Kelley Price. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pee Wee; her parents; her brothers, Don Price and Thurman Price and daughter, Carol Ann Hughes.

The service will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. Visitation for Willa Rea Hughes will be Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM one hour before the funeral. Funeral services will begin around 2:00 PM with a graveside service immediately after.
